My fitness journey began when I was 12 years old. I was a little bit of a chubby kid. As my height began to spring, I became a scrawny 105 pound 5'10 high school freshman. It was then that I started utilizing the weight room.
I idolized Arnold and Lou and wanted to be a big guy because it sucks being the scrawny kid. Girls don't notice you and guys don't respect you when you're the little guy. I was in the gym every day after school busting my butt trying to gain something. I spent every extra dime I had on protein powders and weight gainer supplements and I ate everything I could get my hands on. I made every effort to pack on mass but it seemed to be useless.
I began reading magazine articles and books to learn new principles about how the body functions and how muscles work. I endlessly researched and tested technique after technique until I found what worked for me. I managed to achieve a 465 pound bench press before my 22nd birthday by borrowing concepts from others and adding my own experience to put together workout plans to improve my performance. I have managed to build a physique that many admire and aspire to have.
Personal training and fitness isn’t just about the body. It is an integration of mind, spirit and body. Half of the people who come through the doors in January won’t make it to June and 60% of active gym memberships don’t get used. The reason for this has nothing to do with the body; it’s purely mental and spiritual in nature. These people are mentally and spiritually defeated before they ever pick up a single weight. They are brainwashed to believe that they have no power to make a difference in their own lives and this destroys them in spirit. The ultimate goal as a personal trainer is to empower my client and prove to them that they can make a difference. I will share my strengths with my clients and show them how to build their own, one rep at a time.
